The engine produces the 435 predictive distributions and the national balance of power. It is recomputed every day with the latest polls. The probabilities assume a Democrat-versus-Republican contest in each district: uncontested seats, same-party contests and third parties are not modeled. National simulation

How many seats for each side

Each bar gives the probability of a number of Democratic seats, across 200,000 simulations of the election. Blue: outcomes with a Democratic majority (218 seats). Red: outcomes where the Republicans keep it.

Latest update, October 24 | The Democrats' chance of controlling the House moves from 72% to 73%. Biggest moves: FL-16 (Florida) (D 11% → 18%, on the national environment alone).

D score: D vote share D/(D+R). P(D)/P(R): conditional model probabilities. The classes are derived mechanically from these probabilities. P(other) remains unmeasured; the 435 sheets also show the historical reference.

Boundaries can change between elections. The same number does not guarantee the same boundaries.

Geographic comparison, not a uniform swing: 2024 uses the boundaries of the 119th Congress; 2026 uses the project folder's Census boundaries with the Missouri fix retained. These vintages do not certify later changes. The votes 2024 are normalized on D+R; third parties are excluded and elections without a D/R opponent do not measure a margin between two sides. The national climate

The generic ballot

The question asked of voters: would you vote for the Democratic or the Republican candidate for the House in your district? It is the national measure that moves all 435 districts together.

D +6.9Democratic margin among likely voters, as of October 24, 2026
Since August 1
D +6.1 → D +6.8

Average of all national likely-voter polls: each poll is weighted by its age, its sample and the pollster’s past accuracy. Polls of registered voters or of all adults are not used.

It also enters the Senate and governor calculations.

Method

How the forecast is built

01 · Starting point

Each district starts from its 2024 presidential vote and the persistence of its local votes, measured on the 2010 to 2022 elections. Individual donations to the candidates through 30 September adjust this starting point.

02 · National climate

Today’s generic ballot (D +6.9) moves every district by the same number of points. Where recent district polls exist, they then adjust the district’s margin; campaign internal polls enter after their average bias is removed.

03 · Uncertainty

Four errors add up: national, regional, state and district-specific, each measured on past elections. The national error links all districts.

04 · Simulation

200,000 draws of the whole election. The chance of a majority is the share of draws where a side reaches 218 seats.

Poll bias correction. In the 2006 to 2022 midterms, polls overstated Democrats every time. The average gap depends on the distance to election day: 2.95 points a month out, 2.26 on the eve. The model takes off every poll (generic ballot, race and district polls) the gap matching today's date: 2.49 points today.

What the method gave on past elections

Test on 1,016 district-election pairs from 2010, 2014 and 2018, two weeks before the vote. Mean error on the Democratic two-party share, in points.

Limits
  • Each district is simulated as a Democrat versus Republican contest; unopposed seats, same-party runoffs and third parties are not modelled.
  • District polls are scarce: only those from the last 21 days enter the calculation, one per pollster. Campaign internal polls are corrected for their average bias: 3.5 points taken off Democrats, 4.4 points off Republicans.
  • The test covers only three elections; past errors do not guarantee accuracy in 2026.

A forecast, not a certainty

Figures are recalculated every day with the published polls. Latest calculation: October 24, 2026.

A district given at 70% is lost by the favourite three times in ten. Joint control of the House and the Senate is on the overview page.
